Surface Tension
Question

A capillary tube is dipped vertically in a vessel containing water. The internal diameter of the capillary tube is 2 mm. The water is seen to rise by a distance of 1.5 cm as seen in figure. The density of water is 103 kg/m3 . The wetting is complete. Now the same capillary tube is pulled out of water. It contains a drop of water. When the tube is in its vertical position the drop forms a column.

Linked Question 3

Tube is in vertical position after pulling out of the water. Choose the correct statement(s) for this situation.

if the lower surface has meniscus which is convex (as in (D) option in previous question), the length of the drop is less than 1.5 cm.

if the lower surface is flat, the length of the drop is 1.5 cm.

the lower surface cannot have a radius of curvature of 0.5 mm with a meniscus which is concave (as in (B) option in previous question)

the upper surface will have radius of curvature of 0.5 mm in all the situations.
