Question

A free hydrogen atom after absorbing a photon of wavelength λa gets excited from the state n = 1 to the state n = 4. Immediately after that the electron jumps to n = m state by emitting a photon of wavelength λe. Let the change in momentum of atom due to the absorption and the emission are  ∆pa and  ∆pe, respectively. If λa/λe=15 , Which of the option(s) is/are correct ?

[Use hc = 1242 eV nm; 1 nm = 10–9 m, h and c are Planck's constant and speed of light, respectively]

λe = 418nm

Δpa/Δpe=12

m = 2

The ratio of kinetic energy of the electron in the state n = m to the state n = 1 is 14

Solution

hcλa=13.6[12−142]              .........................(i)

hcλe=13.6[1m2−142]         ................................(ii)

(ii) and (i), we get

λaλe=[1m2−116][1−116]=15

⇒1m2−116=1516×15                 ⇒  1m2−116=316

⇒1m2=316+116⇒m=2

from (ii)

hcλe=13.6[122−142]=13.6×316eV                     ⇒   λe=12400×1613.6×3Å

 ⇒ λe ≈ 4862Å

we have
KEn∝z2n2

⇒  KE2KE1=14

ΔPa=hλa

ΔPe=hλe
