Question

A horizontal cylinder with adiabatic walls is closed at both ends and is divided into two volumes by a frictionless piston that is also thermally insulating. Initially the volume, pressure and temperature of the ideal gas in each side of the cylinder are equal to V0, P0 and T0 respectively. A heating coil in right side volume is used to heat slowly the gas on the side until the pressure reaches 64P027. (γ = 1.5)

The pressure in LHS column is 4P027

The volume in RHS column is 23V016

The temperature in RHS column is 92 T027

The temperature in LHS column is 4 T03

Solution

New pressure will be same in both side for new temp. in left side

P.1−γ  T0γ=(64 P027)1−γTγ

T=(2764)1−γγT0=(2764)1−1.51.5T0

=(2764)−13T0=4T03

64P0V1.527=P0V01.5

V=V0×916

T=9227T0
