In the given sentence "alas!" is an exclamation used to express grief. It is important to retain this emotion when transforming the sentence since it gives us an idea of how the speaker feels about their friend's passing.

Options C and D are statements. However they lack the expression of grief that is present in the given sentence. Thus they are incorrect. Option B, too, is incorrect since "alas", by definition, is an exclamation that cannot be included.

Option A is the correct answer. Not only is it a statement, but it also retains the expression of grief that is present in the given sentence.
