The sentences in the question indicate the sequence of actions taking place. Options C and D do not follow said sequence and are thus incorrect. The first finite verb in the first sentence in the question is in the simple past tense. Having already established the sequence of activities, the first verb will be transformed in the past participle form in the joint sentence, which it is in option A. In option B, the  verb is in the continuous tense. Therefore, options B,C and D are all incorrect.
