Question

Consider a pyramid OPQRS located in the first octant (x≥0, y≥0, z≥0) with O as origin, and OP and OR along the x‑axis and the y‑axis, respectively. The base OPQR of the pyramid is a square with
OP = 3. The point S is directly above the mid‑point T of diagonal OQ such that TS = 3. Then

The length of the perpendicular from P to the plane containing the triangle OQS is 32

The perpendicular distance from O to the straight line containing RS is 152

The equation of the plane containing the triangle OQS is x – y = 0

The acute angle between OQ and OS is π3

Solution

(A)          OT=94  +  94=32

 OS=94  +  94  +  9=332

cos  θ=32332=13

(B)      Equation of plane OQS

           | xyz3303/23/23 |= 0⇒x – y = 0

(C)        Perpendicular distance of the plane   x – y = 0 from the point P(3, 0, 0)  is  = 32

(D)        Straight line RS

x−032  =  y−3−32  =  z3   ⇒  x1  =  y−3−1  =  z2=λ

Let M º (λ, – λ + 3, 2λ)

OM perpendicular to RS Þ         λ + λ – 3 + 4λ = 0          ⇒      λ=12

∴       M≡(12,  52,  1),                        OM=14+254+1=152.
