Question

Consider the given plot of enthalpy of the following reaction between A and B.

                        A + B → C + D

Identify the incorrect statement.

C is the thermodynamically stable product.

D is kinetically stable product.

Formation of A and B from C has highest enthalpy of activation.

Activation enthalpy to form C is 5 kJ mol–1 less than that to form D.

Solution

Ea = (D → C)

= 15 – 0 = 15 kJ mol–1

Ea = (A + B) → C = 15 kJ mol–1

Ea = (A + B) → D = 10 kJ mol–1

Ea = C → (A + B) = 20 kJ mol–1 (high activation enthalpy in the reaction)

∴ Activation enthalpy to form C is 5 kJ mol–1 more than that of form D.
