Question

If a set A is {1, 0, – 1, 2} then which of the following is(are) correct?

A square matrix of order 3 is constructed whose elements are from set A then the probability that matrix is skew symmetric is 2749.

A function f : A → A is defined and f is onto then the probability that f (i)≠∀i∈A is 38.

A function f : A → A is defined then probability that function is onto is 332.

Solution

∵   A = {1, 0, –1, 2}

(a) For skew symmetric matrix, all diagonal elements can be filled in only one way by zero.

For aij = – aji

∴ For every aij(i ≠j)  there are three ways, then for corresponding aji there is only way

∴  Required probability = 3×3×349=2749

(b) For matrix to be symmetric, aij = aji

∴ Probability

=4×4×4×4×4×4×1×1×149=164

(c) Total number of function = 44

number of onto functions = 4!

∴Probability=4!44=24256=332

(d)  f (i) ≠ i

∴   number of function =4!(12!−13!+14!)=9

∴  Probility=94!=924=38
