If  f 2(x) · f (1x1+x)=x3xR – {–1, 1} and f(x) ≠ 0, then which of the following is correct.

f(2) · f(–2) = 16

f (2) f(–2) = 8

f (2) = –12

f (3) = –18

Solution

f2(x)f(1x1+x)=x3                        ....(1)

Replace x by (1x1+x), we get

f2(1x1+x)f(x)=(1x1+x)3                    ....(2)

From (1)2(2), we get

f3(x)=x6(1+x1x)3

f(x)=x2(1+x1x)

f(2)=4(31)=12

and    f (–2) = 4(13)=43
          f (2) f (–2) = 16
and    f (3) = 9×42 = –18
