Solution

f (x) must be a quadratic of the form

f (x) = ax2 + b.

Now, substituting f (x) in the given relation

a(ax2 + b)2 + b – 8xm = 802a−64x2+100

a3x4 + 2a2bx2 + ab2 + b – 8xm = 40a−64x2+100

m must be equal to 4 and a3 – 8 = 0

⇒      a = 2

2a2b = – 64      ⇒         b = – 8

ab2+b⏟120=40a+100⏟120

∴   f (x) = 2x2 – 8

f (3) = 10 ⇒[f(3)m]=[104]=2
