Question

Let P be the image of the point (3, 1, 7) with respect to the plane x – y + z = 3. Then the equation of the plane passing through P and containing the straight line x1=y2=z1  is

2x – y = 0

3x + z = 0

x – 4y + 7z = 0

x + y – 3z = 0

Solution

Image of (3, 1, 7) in the plane x – y + z = 3 is x−31=y−1−1=z−71=−2(3−1+7−31+1+1)

x – 3 = – 4 ⇒ x = – 1

y – 1 = 4 ⇒ y = 5

z – 7 = – 4 ⇒ z = 3

(– 1, 5, 3)

Equation of the plane containing the line x1=y2=z1  and passing through P is | xyz121−153 |=0 .

x (6 – 5) – y (3 + 1) + z (5 + 2) = 0

⇒ x – 4y + 7z = 0.
