Question

Let y = f(x) be a differentiable function ∀x∈R Such that f(f(x)) = x ∀ x∈ [0, 1]. If f(0) = 1, then which of the following is/are correct?

∫01( x−f(x) )2 dx=12

f(x) = 0 has a real root

f '(x) + 1 = 0 has a real root in (0, 1)

∫01( x−f(x) )2 dx=13

Solution

f(0) = 1 and f(f(x)) = x ⇒ f(1) = 0

f'(x)=f(0)−f(1)0−1=−1

for atleast one x ∈ (0, 1)

I=∫01( x−f(x) )2 dx         Put x = f(t)

I=∫10(f(t)−f ( f(t) ) )2 · f'(t) dt=−∫01( f(x)−x )2f'(x) dx

I=∫01( x−f(x) )2 ( 1−f'(x) ) dx−I

2I=( x−f(x) )33 | 0 1=13+13⇒I=13
