Motion of Charged Particle in Uniform Magnetic Field
Question

Light of photon energy hv is incident on a metallic plate having work function φ to eject electrons. The most energetic electrons are then allowed to enter in a region of uniform magnetic field B→=B0i^ as shown in figure. The electrons are projected in x-z plane making an angle θ with the x-axis. Pitch of the helix described by an electron is found to be P. Take mass of electron as m and charge as q. Then

P=2πcosθ2(hν−ϕ)mqB0

If the electron is crossing origin at t = 0, then the z coordinate of the electron as a function of time t is −2m(hv–ϕ)qB0×sinθ×sin[qB0tm]

If the electron is crossing origin at t = 0, then the z coordinate of the electron as a function of time t is 2m(hv–ϕ)qB0×sinθ×sin[qB0tm]

P=2πmqB0(hv–ϕ)

Solution

At any instant of time 't' the location of electron is shown as P. In two dimensional view of electron in y-z plane

v=2KEm=2(hv–φ)m

p = v cosθ×2πmqB0

⇒ pqB0 = 2πm v cos θ

⇒pqB0 = 2π cosθ.m .2(hv–φ)m

⇒pqB0 = 2π cosθ2m(hv–φ)

x - coordinate, x = v cos θ × t

y = – [R – R cos ωt

z = R sin ωt

z =mvsinθqB0×sin[qB0mt]

z=2m(hv–φ)qB0×sinθ×sin[qB0tm]
