An event is called compound event if it contains more than one outcom(or member) of the given sample space.

Example :

When a die is thrown, then sample space

S = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}

Let, C = {1, 3, 5} = the event of occurrence of an odd number

D = {5, 6} = the event of occurrence of a number greater than 4

Here, C and D are compound events.
