We would be understanding the subject verb agreement in this sentence. In this particular sentence, there are two subjects, "Nicolette" and "Tricia" which means the subject is in plural form. The rule states that when the subject is in plural form, the verb also used stays in plural form. 

"was heard" is singular. It is wrong
"were heard" is in plural form. It is correct.
"is heard" is in singular form. It is the wrong option
"are hearing" is plural but in present tense whereas the answer should be in the past. It is the wrong option.
