The two clauses in the sentence are he smiled one day, and, he had finished the ivory statue of a beautiful woman, joined with the conjunction when. It makes complete sense when arranged in this order, indicating the sequence of the events taking place. Option B is the only one which displays this sequence and, thus, is the correct one.
