The correct answer is option A: 'They asked who he was and what he wanted.'
While converting from direct to indirect speech:
1. The simple present tense in the reported speech changes to the simple past tense.
2. The second person in the reported speech changes to the third person.
Applying these two rules in the conversion of the given sentence:
1. 'Who are you' and 'what do you want' change to 'who he was' and 'what he wanted'
2. The second person pronoun 'you' changes to 'he'. Alternatively, we could use 'she' since gender is not specified. 
Therefore, the final answer is option A.
