Question

Species susceptible to disproportionate are readily picked out from an emf diagram. The "normal" behaviour of an element is for emf values to decreases steadily from left to right. Good reducing agents are on the right, good oxidising agents are on the left, and stable species are towards the middle. Whenever this gradual change from more positive to more negative is broken, disproportionation can occur.

Simple Latmier diagrams for the chlorine are given below.

Linked Question 1

Find number species of chlorine which undergo disproportionation in acidic solution:

3

4

2

5

Solution

Normally emf values decrease but if emf value increase then those species undergo disproportionation.

hence ClO2 and HClO2 undergo disproportionation

Linked Question 2

Select correct statement:

ClO2 do not undergo disproportionation.

Disproportionation of ClO2 occurs at much higher rate in acidic solution with respect to basic solution.

Disproportionation of ClO2 occurs at much higher rate in basic solution with respect to acidic solution.

Rate of disproportionation is independent of medium.

Solution

Acidic solution

Basic solution

Difference of emf in basic medium > acidic medium

∴ Disproportionation of ClO2 occurs at much higher rate in basic solution.
