The crow flew down and stole the cheese.
(a) Flew - Intransitive verb.
Here the subject and the intransitive verb together make up a meaningful sentence and does not require a direct object:
The crow flew (down).
(b) Stole - Transitive verb.
The cheese - Object.
Here, 'struck' requires a direct object, the subject and the verb together cannot make up a meaningful sentence:
The crow stole the cheese.
A transitive verb has an object that receives the direct action of the verb. Generally, a transitive verb takes a single object.
An intransitive verb does not require an object. It can make a meaningful sentence without taking a direct object.
