Active sentences in continuous tense are formed from the present participle with tenses of the verb "be".

The structure in the passage follows:
subject + was/were + -ing form of the verb + object
Option A is the correct answer because "coming" satisfies the structure. Whereas, option B, C and D do not contain -ing form of the verb and therefore option A is an appropriate answer
