Solution

Let equation of the circle be

x2 + (y – t)2 = r2              ......(1)

y = 4 – x2                       ......(2)

 t =r 2                                   .....(3)

From (1) and (2)

4 – y + (y−r 2)2= r2

y2 – y (22  r+1)+ r2 + 4 = 0

Now,     D = 0                           ⇒        (22  r+1)2 –4 (r2+4) = 0

4r2 +  4 2 r – 15 = 0                  ⇒         4r2 + 2 · 2 2 r + 2 = 17

⇒(2r+2)2= 17                           ⇒           2r+2 = 17

r =  17 −22≅  1.3

Again, when the circle touches the parabola at (0, 4) then

4 – t = r             ...(i)

t=r2           ...(ii)

from (i) and (ii)

4 – r2 = r⇒       r =42+1

⇒r = 4(2–1) .≃ 1.656.
