Question

The solid sphere of radius R = 1 cm initially spinning at ω0 = 300 rad/sec is dropped from a height H = 5m on a static (initially) wedge as shown. If μ=13 between wedge and sphere and coefficient of restitution for the collision between them is e=12, then the distance travelled by the wedge from the time instant of the sphere hitting the wedge till the instant, the sphere hits the ground for the first time is 5N121 metres. Find N

∴ JN = M(vN + 8)                                               .....(i)

Jf = µJN = M(–vt + 6)                                          .....(ii)

and, JfR = ICM (ω + ω0)                                     .....(iii)

For wedge just after collision

∴ JN sin 37° – Jf cos 37° = 2Mv

⇒ JN = 6 Mv                                                      .....(iv)

and from Newton's formula

3v5+vN=−e(0−uN)                            .....(v)

from (i), (iv) and (v),

v=2011m/s→andvN=3211m/s

and JN=120M11

from (ii), vt=2611m/s

Now, Sphere's time of flight till ground for first time

T=2uyg=2g(vNcos37°−vtcos53°)=211sec

∴ Distance moved by wedge during this duration = vt=40121 m
