Muscle cramps during intense exercise are primarily caused by the accumulation of a specific acid produced in our muscles when they work without sufficient oxygen. This process is called anaerobic respiration.

Step 2: What Happens During Strenuous Exercise?

Step 3: The Acid Responsible for Cramps

The incomplete breakdown of glucose in anaerobic respiration produces lactic acid (chemically known as 2-hydroxypropanoic acid). The chemical reaction is:

The buildup of lactic acid in the muscle tissues lowers the pH, creating a more acidic environment. This acidity interferes with the muscle's ability to contract and relax properly, leading to fatigue, pain, and the sensation of cramps.

  • Pyruvic Acid: This is an intermediate product in the breakdown of glucose. It is converted into lactic acid during anaerobic respiration. It is not the final acid that accumulates.
