Question

Two persons A and B wear glasses of optical powers (in air) P1 = + 2 D and P2 = + 1D respectively. The glasses have refractive index 1.5. Now they jump into a swimming pool and look at each other. B appears to be present at distance 2m (from A) to A. A appears to be present at distance 1m (from B) to B. Find out the refractive index of water in the swimming pool, in the form X5 and fill value of X.

Solution

We have f1 = 50 cm and f2 = 100 cm

let the real distance between A and B be x. Also let refractive index of liquid be µ. Then

1f1=(32−1)(1R1−1R2)  ⇒  (1R1−1R2)=2f1

1f'1=(32μ−1)(1R1−1R2)

⇒1f'1=2f1(3−2μ2μ)  and  1f2'=2f2(3−2μ2μ)

Now, for A we have

−(1200)−(1−x)=250(3−2μ2μ)

1x=1200+250  (3−2μ2μ)                         .....(1)

Also for B we have

−1100−(−1x)=2100(3−2μ2μ)

So, 1x=1100+2100(3−2μ2μ)           ......(2)

from (1) and (2) we get

µ=65
