Question

Two thin convex lenses of focal lengths f1 and f2 are separated by a horizontal distance d (where d < f1 < f2) and their centres are displaced by a vertical separation D as shown in the figure. Taking the origin O, at the centre of first lens, the x and y co-ordinate of the focal point of this lens system, for a parallel beam of rays coming from the left, are given by

x=f1(f1+d)f1+f2−d ,  y=Δf1+f2

x=f1f2f1+f2 ,  y=Δ

x=f1f2+d(f1−d)f1+f2−d ,  y=Δ(f1−d)f1+f2−d

x=f1f2+d (f1−d)f1+f2−d ,  y=Δf2f1+f2−d

Solution

Lens -1

1v'−1u=1f1

u=∞

1v'=1f1

v' is the object for f2

u2 = f1 – d

1v−1u2=1f2

1v−1f1−d=1f2

1v=1(f1−d)+1f2

v=f2(f1−d)f2+ (f1−d)

from the first lens the final image is at a distance

f1f2+d(f1−d)f2+f1−d=df2+ d(f1−d) + f2f1−f2df2+f1−d
