Question

What volumes should you mix of 0.2 M NaCl and 0.1 M CaCl2 solution so that in resulting solution the concentration of positive ion is 40% lesser than concentration of negative ion. Assuming total volume of solution 1000 mL.

600 mL NaCl, 400 mL CaCl2

800 mL NaCl, 200 mL CaCl2

400 mL NaCl , 600 mL CaCl2

Solution

V1         ,     NaCl      →     Na+     +     Cl–
                0.2 V1        0.2 V1        0.2 V1

V2        ,    CaCl2   →     Ca2+    +     2Cl–
                0.1 V2        0.1 V2        2 × 0.1 V2
  ∴ [+ve] = 0.6 [–ve]
   (0.2V1+0.1V2V1+V2)=0.6(0.2V1+0.1V2V1+V2)
    = 0.12 V1 + 0.12 V2
    0.08 V1 = 0.02 V2
