Question

Which of the following statement(s) is/are correct?

The number of quadratic equations having real roots which remain unchanged even after squaring their roots is 3.

The locus of the mid-points of chords of the circle  x2 + y2 – 2x – 6y – 1 = 0, which are passing through origin is  x2 + y2 – x – 3y = 0.

The number of solutions of the equation tan 2θ + tan3θ = 0, in the interval [0, π] is equal to 6.

For x1, x2, x3 > 0, the minimum value of 2x1x2 + 128x32x22 + x234x1x32 equals   24.

Solution

(A)          We have a + b = a2 + b2 and ab = a2 b2

∴          Number of quadratic equations with real roots are 3. Ans

(B)          We have

               tan 3π = tan (π – 2θ)

⇒            3π = nπ + (π – 2θ), n∈I

⇒            θ = (n + 1) π5,n∈I

            Putting n = – 1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4

            we get θ = 0,  π5, 2π5, 3π5, 4π5, π

∴       Number of solutionsof the equation in the interval [0, π] = 6.  Ans.

(C)        Using A.M. ≥ G.M. (for positive numbers)

So,        2x1x2+128x32x22+x234x1x323≥4

⇒            Minimum value = 12 Ans.

(D)          Let M (x1, y1) be the mid-point of chord.

               m1m2 = – 1 ⇒(y1−3x1−1) (y1x1)=−1

⇒            Locus of M (x1, y1) is x2 + y2 – x – 3y = 0.
