Center of Mass
Question

A small ball B of mass m is suspended with light inelastic string of length L from a block A of same mass m which can move on smooth horizontal surface as shown in the figure. The ball is displaced by angle θ from equilibrium position  & then released. The displacement of centre of mass of A + B system till the string becomes vertical is

zero

L2(1cosθ)

L2(1sinθ)

Solution

The center of mass (COM) of the A+B system has no external horizontal forces acting on it (smooth surface), so its horizontal position remains unchanged. Initially, the COM is at a fixed point. When the ball is released and swings down, block A moves left to conserve the COM's horizontal position. The vertical motion does not affect the horizontal COM. Therefore, the horizontal displacement of the COM is zero.

Final Answer: zero
