Steps in Recombinant DNA (rDNA) Technology

Recombinant DNA technology involves combining DNA molecules from different sources into a single molecule to create new genetic combinations. This is fundamental in genetic engineering, biotechnology, and medical research. Below are the key steps involved:

Step 1: Isolation of Genetic Material

The first step is to isolate the DNA that contains the desired gene. This can be from any organism (e.g., human, bacteria, plant). The DNA is extracted and purified using biochemical methods.

Step 4: Transformation into a Host Organism

Step 5: Selection of Transformed Cells

Not all cells take up the vector. Selectable markers (e.g., antibiotic resistance genes on the vector) are used to identify transformed cells. Only cells with the vector grow on media containing the antibiotic.

Step 6: Expression and Amplification

Selected cells are cultured to multiply, producing many copies of the recombinant DNA (cloning). If the goal is protein production, the gene is expressed, and the protein is harvested.
