He ordered them to take that bird away and added that its gilded cage reminded him of his father whom he had imprisoned.
In indirect speech, the reported clause's tense is changed according to the tense of the reporting verb. Here, the reporting verb is in past tense so the entire reported clause will be changed to past tense. Consequently, the past tense verb will be changed to past perfect tense: had imprisoned". "Me" and "I" will change to "him" and "he" respectively as they are referring to the speaker. As there are two sentences as quoted speech "he added that" or "further added" will be used.
