Question

(i) Draw a ray diagram showing image formation in a compound microscope. Define the term 'limit of resolution' and name the factors on which it depends. How is it related to resolving power of a microscope ?
(ii) Suggest two ways by which resolving power of a microscope can be increased.
(iii) "A telescope resolves whereas a microscope magnifies." Justify this statement.

(i) As per Rayleigh criteria of the resolution, we know that the two objects are said to be well separated when the central bright fringe of the first object lies on the first minimum of the fringe pattern of the second object

So the limit of resolution is the minimum distance between two objects at which we can see two clear separated images of the objects
So we will have the limit of resolution for single slit given as
so it depends on the
(i) distance of an object from the eye
(ii) Wavelength of light
(iii) size of the slit
Similarly, for simple microscope, we can say that due to the circular aperture of the lens there is a slight change in the formula as here we know
f = focal length of the lens
d = aperture of the lens
(iii) magnification and resolution are two different terms.
magnification compare the size of image with that of the object where is resolution deals with the fact of the weather image of two nearby objects are distinguished or not a telescope is used to see far away objects examples like stars planets acceptor so resolution please a very important role in the case of the telescope, on the other hand, a microscope is practically used to see the object which cannot be seen with naked eyes do microscope has its important from magnification point of you.
