In this sentence, we would be understanding the subject verb agreement. The rule states that when the subject happens to be plural, the verb is also taken to be plural. On the other hand, when the subject is singular, the verb becomes singular as well. In this sentence, the subject is singular. The adjectives used describes the same person. Thus, usage of "were" as a verb is wrong. 
"Was" is used for singular verbs. It is the correct answer
"are" is used for plural verbs
"were to be" explains things in the past and used in case of plural subjects. 
Option D is wrong as Option A is correct.
