Brown algae has economic importance as a source of Iodine and Potash. Fucus and Laminaria are rich source of iodine. 25% of iodine is obtained from kelps and it also contain Br, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Mo etc. Because of having iodine, the dried kelps are used to treat goiter.
