The inventor of the World Wide Web (WWW) is Tim Berners-Lee. He proposed the concept in 1989 while working at CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) to facilitate information sharing among scientists. By 1991, he had developed the foundational technologies: HTML (HyperText Markup Language), HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol), and the first web browser. Unlike the internet (which is the underlying network infrastructure), the WWW is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the internet. Berners-Lee's invention revolutionized global communication and information access.
Internet vs. World Wide Web: The internet is the global network of interconnected computers, while the WWW is a service that operates over the internet, consisting of web pages and sites.
Key Technologies: HTML (for creating web pages), HTTP (for transferring data), and URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) for addressing web resources.
Tim Berners-Lee made his invention royalty-free, ensuring its open and rapid growth. He also founded the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which develops web standards.
